Tarawoner and Keyaira Kelly Bridge Generational Gaps with the New Talk To Your Mom Podcast

We are currently in the middle of a podcast boom in 2019. Podcasting has proven to be a useful and lucrative medium for many. In the pantheon of great podcasts, I think it can be challenging to find a show that sets itself apart from the others. The Talk to Your Mom Podcast sets itself apart from its premise. Two strong, insightful, and beguiling Black women who speak on the Black woman experience. They present a mother/daughter dynamic that is unique and special to say the least.

Tarawoner Lyles-Kelly is a Life Coach and the founder of the TYL foundation. Her daughter is Keyaira Kelly who is a Writer, Producer, and a women's advocate. Together, they co-host Talk To Your Mom in which they share experiences with one another. Quite frankly, they put each other on. They give each other game. As you listen, you hear two women who actually listen to one another. There isn't any condescension involved.

I think it's a great example to set for all of us. Many times we experience parents not willing to relate to us or to ever be transparent about their own struggles. Talk To Your Mom pulls the curtains back. Already three episodes in and they have had candid conversations about life and career balance, dating in the 60's vs dating currently, and what their "first times" were like.

I mean seriously, where have you ever heard a mother and daughter have a candid conversation about the first times they had sex? When have you heard that and heard no judgment at all involved? I was blown away by it not so much because of the subject matter, but because I saw Mrs. Kelly allow Keyaira to share her truth in a truly safe space. They may not always agree, but they always listen to one another. The older I get, I realize that people really appreciate a good listener. There's lots of love involved in listening without judgment.

Mrs. Kelly's respect for her Keyaira is evident throughout the conversations. You can tell that she values her thoughts and her daughter's convictions. She still maintains that motherly covering and still sees it fit to call it as she sees it. It's something many of us can relate to, and hearing it genuinely play out in a podcast setting almost makes you forget that you're listening to one. These are legitimate conversations and her reactions to a lot of the content are as visceral as they come.

Keyaira matches her mother's candor as well. She certainly asserts herself as a woman who knows who she is. She respectfully engages in debate with her mother when she has to put her on to how things tend to go nowadays. What you tend to find many times is that in order to really live comfortably, you need to employ principles of the past along with contemporary principles to find success in any lane.

Both of these women show what it is to maintain real respect and love for one another. This podcast is about family, growth, and understanding. I think it provides a ton of food for thought and also an impetus to talk to our own families about issues that still may seem taboo. The truth is that if we don't ever speak on these things, we will miss out, and that's certainly to our detriment.

Talk To Your Mom seeks to change that every week from here on out. You can listen on iTunes and Spotify. Feel free to leave 5 star ratings as well as I know you'll find it'll be worth every bit.

These are my words and I make no apologies.
