It's Complicated
A few nights ago I watched for the second time this movie called "It's Complicated." The movie stars Alec Baldwin and Meryll Streep. The plot goes that they are a divorced couple for over 10 years and they begin to rekindle this romance. Problem is the romance take on the role of an affair being that Alec has since remarried. Alec isn't happy in his marriage and begins to cheat on his wife with his ex wife.
Now there's much more to this movie but I refuse to spoil all that for you. What strikes me in this movie is the point that Alec Baldwin's cheating is addressed but not in any way seen as a "big deal." Mind you we're speaking of two individuals in this affair who are at this point a lot older. This isn't your young people making spur of the moment decisions. These two people are conscious of what they do and understand what comes with everything they're doing. My question really is what's cheating? Technically speaking yea if you're in a monogamous relationship and you have extradyadic involvement (Relations outside the relationship), people would call that cheating. But what if you're someone like Alec who isn't happy in his marriage to begin with?
The answer might seem obvious but in that character's mind if he's disconnected emotionally I'm pretty sure he feels he's no longer married. I'm not trying to argue what's right or what's wrong, but that scenario is just interesting. You may say he should end his marriage if he wasn't happy; but we also know that's a long arduous process. Maybe he just didn't feel like doing it yet. But for this movie to showcase rekindling of old flames between two responsible older adults while one is adulterous and not give it it's usual negative connotation blows my mind. Needless to say I love the movie, the concept is genius and it's good to see older people doing things as if they were young again. It also gives you a different perspective on cheating and what may drive people to do so. The movie indirectly asks you "what would you do?" And I think that's creative.... so what would you do?
